What are row variants?

Row variants are versions of a row that you configure differently for a specific audience or purpose.

In Presentation Manager, you can easily create row variants by modifying various settings, including lists, device type, users, segmentation tags, and timeframe (the dates and times of day that the row is available).

For example, you may have a use case where you need to display different content depending on your audience's age group. There's no need to re-enter information to achieve this; simply duplicate the row and then tweak the user settings on the newly-created variant.

How do row variants work?

When a user visits a page in their app, Presentation Manager reads the available row variants from right to left, checking each in turn until it finds one that matches that user's device, profile, and settings. It sends this information to the user's app, which then knows the appropriate row variant to display. This puts you entirely in control of what your users see.

Note that the row variant furthest to the left will usually be the default, or fallback, view, which is shown to users who don't meet any of the criteria you've set for the other variants.

How do I add a new row variant?

Select the  button next to the row variant tabs. This creates a new row variant to the right.

Row variant examples

Seen below is a Home page in Presentation Manager with two row variants of the H5 Hero row. One is configured to display on TVs, the other on browsers (Responsive Web apps).

Responsive Web: This is the version of the Home page your users will see in the front end when using a browser.

TV app: This is the Home page your users will see when viewing on a TV.

You may wish to create a variation of an existing row that shows content in a different order for each combination of device, user group, segmentation tag(s), and timeframe.

How do I configure my row variant?

• Select an existing row variant to display the options you can configure, or, to create a new variant, click the button. 
• The configuration panel will open. For a new variant, you'll see a request to SPECIFY DETAILS. Here you need to enter your desired row variant settings. The settings are explained in more detail below.

Lists

Search for and select the list that you want your row variant to display.

Devices

Any Device is selected by default, which means the row variant displays on any user device.

To specify which devices can access your row variant, select them from the list. Expand to view further category options by clicking the arrow.

User

Any User is selected by default, which means any user from the list has access to the row variant. To change this, select the desired user type(s) from the list, using the arrow to expand and view further category options. Read our user groups article to find out more about this topic.

Segmentation Tags

Target rows at specific groups, based on age, activity, behavioural analytics, etc. Depending on how you've grouped your users, you can easily direct specific content to them. Follow the link for further information on how to set segmentation tags.

Add Timeframe (scheduling)

Add Timeframe (previously labelled Any Date) allows you to schedule a date and time for your content to be available to your end-users. Follow the link for further information on how to set variant scheduling.

Properties panel

In the Properties panel (shown below) you have further options to define the alignment of your imagery. 

Once you've created and configured your row variant(s), you're ready to hit on the page, so it's available to your users in their apps.
