What are downloads?
Downloads are assets that can be downloaded for offline playback, allowing your users to access content in airplane mode, offline, or out and about without a stable internet connection.
Note: This feature is only available on native iOS and Android.
What can users download?
Users can only download assets that are offered for download via the associated Download Offer Rule. This rule is typically set at the point of ingestion and is subject to the licensing agreements you have with your content distributors.
How does it work?
If you have made an asset available for download, users have the option to either watch or download it.
Movie downloads
In the case of Movies, the download feature appears as a large text button, right next to the Watch button. Clicking this begins the download and surfaces a progress bar at the bottom of the screen.
Episode downloads
TV shows, on the other hand, must be downloaded by episode, so instead of seeing a download text box next to the show title, they see a download button next to each individual episode of a selected season. While the AXIS apps do not support simultaneous downloading, you can queue each episode to download automatically.
How do users access and manage their downloads?
Your users can access their downloads from the My Downloads page, available via the main menu, or via a link that you have created in Presentation Manager. This page is titled Downloads by default; however, this can also be changed within Presentation Manager to the name of your choice.
When your user is on the My Downloads page, they have access to all their downloaded content, ordered by recently downloaded (descending), as well as the ability to delete individual movies or TV episodes.
Tip: If the app does not detect any internet connection, users are automatically directed to the My Downloads page, where they can easily navigate to their downloaded content.
How do users change their download settings?
Any signed-in user who is eligible to download content can adjust their download settings by navigating to their profile and tapping on My Preferences. Here, users have the option to toggle between downloading on WiFi only (or on WiFi and Mobile Data) and the ability to specify the quality of the downloaded video.
Note: The exact quality options available are applied on a per-project basis. Please speak with your service delivery team about the quality options you wish to offer your users.
In these download settings, users can also view the amount of storage space the app is using (mobile only) and choose to delete all downloaded content if they wish. Be aware that this only represents the combined storage of the AXIS app on the user's device and does not provide an individual breakdown.
